Summary

Game Description

Call of Duty: World at War is a first-person shooter and the latest installment in the Call of Duty video game series for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, DS, and PC. Moving back from the modern setting of CoD4, World at War is set in the Pacific theater and Eastern front of World War II. The violence is off the charts: this is a vision of World War II you've never seen before! Gone are gritty gray colors and sanitized violence. In its place are vibrant hues, gushing gore, and intense language. World at War will also expand upon Call of Duty 4's award-winning online multiplayer with new modes, drivable vehicles, and a host of lethal WWII-era weapons (including a flamethrower, the Tommy gun, and the world's first true assault rifle).

Return to WWII in

In my opinion, Call of Duty 4 is one of the greatest online multi player games of all time. I was quite concerned when I learned that Treyarch would be handling the development of 5. This coupled with the fact that they made the choice to return to WWII left me with serious concerns about the quality of this game.

I can easily say that all of my concerns were unfounded. Much to my surprise the return to WWII really works (theres a reason there are dozens of WWII shooters). Although we get warped to the past again, the action maintains it's fast and furious pace. The campaign while VERY short, is every bit as intense and exciting as Modern Warfare's and IMHO is actually more fun.

World at War doesn't reinvent the Call of Duty formula by any means, but builds on the success of it's predecessors. If you were a fan of Modern Warfare's multi player, then you will find a familiar niche in World at War. It is debatable whether or not you prefer WWII weapons or modern ones, but the game play is identical to 4 except for the inclusion of tanks on select stages.

Overall, I would say that unless you have an extreme aversion to WWII shooters you should definitely check this one out. Call of Duty World at War definitely lives up to it's namesake, and adds to the legacy of the Call of Duty series.

Call of needing improvement!

Ok, I bet the Nazi's and the Japaneese in only six hours I think. I also played the game using the but stroke, or Bayonet 90% of the time running through it like nothing. That is just rediculous! Call Of Duty 4 is far supperior. The one thing that was fun about this game which forced me to give this game two stars was the use of the "Flame Thrower". Do not buy, rent it, beat it, return it!

  • Nov. 11, 2008 Review: Call of Duty: World at War - 360

For all the talk about how first-person shooters have milked World War II dry, the conflict's sheer battlefield variety and tactical scope make it a natural home for the genre. World at War doesn't innovate with quite the ambitious vigor of Call of Duty 4, and it falters a little on the single-player front, but it's every bit as energizing where it matters most.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Developer Treyarch did a fantastic job of not reinventing the wheel with World at War. Rather, they took the best elements of Modern Warfare and expanded upon them. The end product is a thrilling experience that injects some of the visceral punch back into World War II. The single-player mode is short but sweet and it unlocks the awesome Nazi Zombies mode but the true strength of WaW is the compelling multiplayer, which should have you huddled in the virtual trenches for a long time to come.
