  • Review: Fable II (360)

The original Fable promised gamers the world but upon its release many players lamented the unexplained absence of many promised features. Even though it ultimately turned out to be an exceptionally enjoyable game, and acclaimed designer Peter Molyneux apologized to his fans, the whole affair left a bitter taste in many mouths.

It's now four years later and it seems as if everyone involved has learned their lesson. As a result, the superior sequel, Fable II, is landing on store shelves with far more realistic expectations. What's most surprising isn't that the game exceeds those tempered expectations in almost every way that matters, but how well the many disparate activities come together to create a beautifully coherent whole.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Lots of games claim you can go anywhere and do anything inside their worlds. The trouble is, once you've eluded the cops for the umpteenth time, the whole exercise starts to feel hollow when your actions leave no lasting impact. What makes Fable II so thoroughly absorbing, despite a few notable shortcomings, is the heady illusion that every choice you make sends ripples through the world, its people, and your own simulated heart.

Yes, you've been burned before when you bought into the fantastical promises that Peter Molyneux made but he's learned his lesson and so have you: the hype has been kept to a minimum and our expectations have been kept in check, which is a good thing for everyone involved. The developers can release a game to realistic expectations and gamers aren't left disappointed because they didn't get 'teh best game evar!!!!1111!!1!' But guess what: Fable II is pretty damn good, so you can safely let your expectations climb high, because chances are this full featured and wonderfully complex game will meet them.

Fable 2 Fun but short

I love the game. My main problems with it was that it was to short and the final "boss" battle was very anti-climatic. Another thing that kinda sorta irritated me was how um...BUTCH the females get when you update physique... they look like buff dudes with boobs. I think there should have been more side quests. I LOVED the fact i couldn't "die" in the game though and hope they carry that on to fable 3. There were a few bug here and there. A.I. of heros could be kinda bad at times or they'd freeze, sometimes you person would kinda freeze too. Overall though it was a great game. I like how they expanded on some features and creatures from the first fable and such. Here's hoping there will be WORLD travel in fable 3!

not so greatness

Over all I liked the game and still recommend it to any rpg fan...but
It still isn't what many hyped it up to be.To me its just what fable 1 should have been. The visuals aren't were even close were they should be coming from microsoft. You'd figure they'd be able to get the most out of there own hardware.Controls haven't changed any.But there are plenty of new things to do along the way of being the hero.Maybe I've come to expect to much after one to many final fantasy games but the shortness of the game even with doing the massive amount of side quests just doen't do it for me. The only thing that saves it is the replayability from your actions haveing a effect on the world.
but since i dont think anything will be changed short of the next fable just not selling (which wont happen ) may be i can hope another company will take the innovative ideas from fable and build an epic rpg around it .

Incredibly addicting

This is by far the most insanely addicting game I've ever played. The only thing that came at all close was Mass Effect. I really like the dog element of the game, although I think I made a bad choice at the end of the game. Not gonna spoil anything though.
