The first Resistance game on the PSP adds some awesome PSP / PS3 features!
TOKYO, JAPAN: Behind closed doors at TGS 2008, I got a special look at Resistance: Retribution for the PSP, the first Resistance game on Sony's handheld console. Taking place after the events of Resistance: Fall of Man and before the start of Resistance 2, Retribution is doing a lot of things to make a substantial presence in the Resistance universe.
Resistance 2 owners can 'infect' Resistance: Retribution on the PSP, unlocking new features.
PSP / PS3 Connect Features
The most interesting thing Retribution is doing comes with the way it connects to the PS3. First, there is a feature that the developers are calling "Infected Mode." With this feature, you must have Resistance 2 and Retribution. If you load up R2 on the PS3, you can connect the PSP and Retribution will get "infected" by R2. This opens up a bunch of cool features for the PSP game, including access to new areas, a new character skin, a new weapon and more. Obviously you can play the full game without it, but Infected mode does provide a greater experience for the PSP game.
The second feature is called "PSP Plus," and is quite innovative for PSP and PS3 owners. With PSP plus, you'll be able to connect the PSP to your TV via the video out cable, then use your PS3 to play Retribution with a PS3 controller. The auto aim feature in the PSP game is disabled, and you play the game with a dual-analog stick control scheme on your TV. I saw it in action, and it looks like it works great.
PSP-3000
It's also interesting to note that Retribution looks excellent on the new PSP-3000, the updated version of the PSP that has a brighter, more vibrant-colored screen. And the refresh rate of the screen is improved, meaning that FPS aiming isn't quite as jerky as it used to be.
As for the game itself, Retribution is looking like one of the best shooters to come on the PSP. It will introduce new enemies, weapons and other features into the Resistance universe, such as new female Chimera enemies who attack like speedy, ferocious zombies, similar to the Grim in R2.
We a saw a new gun that fires sticky grenades that can attach to environmental objects or even enemies, and when detonated, will blow Chimera to bloody bits. The short demo concluded with a romp through an area infested with the new female enemies. After, I was able to take a look at the new PSP-3000 running Retribution alongside an older PSP, and it was a noticeable difference.
You can play Resistance: Retribution on with a PS3 controller!
