Xbox 360 outsells PS3 3 to 1 on Black Friday

$199 and a fat game library are an easy sale

REDMOND, Wash. - Dec. 1, 2008 - Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system kicked off the holidays with record-breaking console sales on one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year in the U.S. Retailers reported Xbox 360 console sales over the Black Friday weekend were on pace to beat previous years, outselling the PlayStation 3 by a three-to-one ratio and estimating a 25 percent increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales figures from 2007.

Strong game sales rounded out a historic Black Friday for Xbox 360, with record-paced software sales continuing for key Microsoft titles, such as "Gears of War 2," "Fable II," and "Lips." Xbox 360 continues to have the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.

"We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market," said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009."

Xbox 360 sales have also surged worldwide since the September price drop, outselling the PlayStation 3 week over week across Europe. Console sales in Europe are up as much as 400 percent, with sales nearly double year over year and reaching 7 million consoles sold this generation.

With a mass-market price point starting at $199.99 worldwide (estimated retail price) for Xbox 360 Arcade, a games lineup of more broad-appeal social titles than any other platform, and the recently launched New Xbox Experience, Xbox 360 is leading the industry and inviting everyone to play.

I think if the Wii was more available, it would have outsold the 360 and PS3 combined.

This is great for MS, but is it still for the consumer. I was at Circuit City yesterday and saw 3 people within the 20 minutes I was there returning 360's. I asked one mom why and was surprised to hear her bringing back old ghosts: RROD!
I visit CC at least 3 times a month and since October I've seen 6 people waiting in line at the Customer Service counter with 360's in hand.
All I want to saw is MS is still Buyer Beware. I enjoy gaming on all three systems(less for the Wii), but why can't we the consumer get a solid product from MS. I've had 4 360's RROD on me, I have an Elite now hoping this will end.
The 360's cost less for a reason.
As much as it fun to play, it comes with caution.
No fanboy flaming here, as I enjoy all that is gaming no matter what system it's on!!

I've been to a few CC to grab a few deals and have yet to see anyone returning a 360. I'm not saying it didn't happen, just saying I haven't seen one return in my visits to CC. Out of the hundreds of people scurrying around CC, you happen to notice 3 with 360' returns. Again, not saying it didn't happen.

This is it. The 360 is now poised to be the dominant force in the industry....... remember Black Friday 2008.... the day the 360 finally pushed ahead. You just can't argue with numbers like that...

Also, let's not forget all of those first time gamers that now have a Wii will undoubtedly out grow their Wi in a year or two and it will be the 360 that they turn to due to the familiarity of it, and it's the next logical step for a young or new gamer.

Good for them.........and not to fear PS3 fans, this is actually good for everyone. You see, this means that Sony will be trying EXTRA hard to please which in turn will make MS step up their game... this COULD have been the PS3 if they would have bit the bullet and slashed their price down to counter... To be in the board room with the Sony suits right now must be a chaotic place to be, all the screaming and finger pointing, the reality is starting to sink in for sure, other than cutting the price lower than the 360, ... they are so screwed

Yet your still on the site on one story hitting refresh waiting for someone to post. Your such a f**king loser, I don't think the question should be what happened gamepro it should be what happened to your life that your waiting for post on a site you claim to hate and no one wants you on anyway instead of getting a job or a girl friend. It's also funny how your such a big fag and you love the wii, it's ironic if you think about it. But that's all I'm going to say I'm not even going to fight when you resond because I know fighting with guys is what gets you off freak.

To deadmanwalking:

How am I full of Sh*t as you say if this is my personal experience and observation?
I'm sorry if you took personal offense to my comment as none was intended.

......you know I don't care what you response is!

We're all gamers and need to address our issues as gamers and not posterchild fanboys.
Games are games......

This really isn't that surprising sense most of America is having money issues. But because of these money issues they're going to spring for the cheapest system because they can't afford to splurge that much. Microsoft has found a niche in the system....most of America including the lower middler class can afford to buy a Xbox 360 thus increasing sales... Nice idea....
