Developers are thinking creatively in an effort to fight used game sales -- maybe too creatively.
Retailers like GameStop profit off sellers of used-games while helping buyers save a little
In an interview with UK publication GamesIndustry.biz, Epic Games president Mike Capps said, "I've talked to some developers who are saying, 'If you want to fight the final boss, go online and pay $20. But if you buy the retail version of the game, you get it for free.'"
The statement comes as some publishers and developers frown upon used-game sales, even though the practice is legal and standard with other retail products. Capps even says his company has a policy that no employees buy used games. "We have a rule at Epic that we don't buy any used games, because this is how we make our money and how all our friends in the industry make money."
In an effort to keep retailers like GameStop from turning a profit on second-hand sales, publishers like Epic, EA, and Harmonix have begun offering downloadable incentives and exclusives to factory sealed purchasers in an effort to encourage players to buy new. Digital distribution, already used by smaller downloadable games, is increasingly becoming a viable solution to cut the middle-man and retain a larger portion of the profits.

Wow sounds crappy. Lets charge you for something that is totally legal, oh and lets do something illegal by telling our employees what they can and can't buy. And people wonder why people look at gamers and developers and morons.
OH and didn't everyone call Metallica Sell Outs when they did something similar with Napster? Waiting to see if people boycotte these developers and call them Sell Outs.

All sorts of different kinds of companies have policies stating what their employees can and cannot do in their personal life. If I worked at Epic, I would still buy used games. To hell with them. When I am at work and on the clock, they can tell me what to do. But no employer tells me what I can and cannot do on my time. If they had a problem with that, I would tell them to increase my salary if they want me buying new instead of used.
The internet will be the downfall of the industry, where you end up paying more for what you could have bought in the store for less. The Internet has already been the downfall of GamePro's magazine.

With the cost of producing a game this generation, I completely understand their desire to cut into used game sales. Think about if a used game goes through 4 different owners who all play it and then return it, that's 4 owners for the price of one game. While this, I imagine, wouldn't hurt online multi-player games (i.e. Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Gears, etc.) what it does hurt is single-player gaming. I personally love roleplaying games, but what's the incentive of making a new one when your profit margin drops off so severely compared to making an online shooter? I know people hate to here about profit margins, but it's a business. They don't just make the games because they love to. This is one of the big reasons for DLC, to bolster their profits so they can continue to make games for us, and to encourage more people to hang on to their games. On the flip side, publisher's need to instill more replay value into their single-player games, think Chrono Trigger or Tales of Symphonia and update their business model. Help support your favorite hobby, buy new or don't complain when everything being released is shovelware.

How the hell is Epic going to dictate what their employees should and should not buy? What about games that aren't manufactured anymore and the only way you can buy them is used? Is Epic going to punish them for that?

I fully agree with the posts about Epic dictating what their employees can or cannot do. I don't think they have a problem with people buying used games that are no longer made. I get on Amazon every once in a while to pick up old PS1 games. It's just that game companies are trying to cope with the high costs of producing a game on the 360 and PS3, which is why you see a lot of ports of last-gen games to the Wii.

ok well i work at a flea market selling new and used games, my uncle gets the new games straight from distributers so the companies are still making a profit off of them, and i see nothing wrong with used games, i see a problem when a store like EB wants to give me 50 cents for a N64 cartridges thats y i frown upon used games, and why i only use the flea market that way i get the real value for a game, like if i had all the games i ever bought my collection would be over 200 games, but after i finish a game and am bored of it i trade it and get a new one, or now since i work with my uncle ill just sell it at the store
